At the sixth China International Import Expo (进口博览会) (CIIE) in Shanghai, a piece of artwork looking like a Taihu Lake Stone was the center of attention. It perfectly combined traditional craftwork with natural art, and showed the beauty of the stone after which it was modeled. What impressed the visitors most was that the “stone” was actually made entirely from bamboo.
It was the work of Qian Lihuai, an inheritor (继承者) of traditional bamboo weaving skills. In the natural material—bamboo, Qian sees a number of possibilities for artistic expression. “I’ve always thought of bamboo weaving as a kind of brush to paint the world,” he explains. The Laboratory of Cultural Trade, a cultural trade platform, was responsible for introducing Qian’s work to the CIIE. It focuses on the cultural trade industry and promoting cultural exchange and cooperation with other countries.
Yang Zhaojie, a Lab manager, explains that Qian’s work is easily understood by foreign audiences and that foreign organsizations have expressed interest in working with Qian. In March, Qian was invited to create a bamboo installation (装饰艺术) , for the Italian fashion brand Bulgari. In August, he held a two-week exhibition working with a local restaurant in Tokyo. During Art Market Budapest, Hungary in October, he worked with local museums and all the pieces sold out in the first two weeks.
Yang says that the cooperation with Qian has provided both sides with fresh means for development. “During our cooperation, one of his standout qualities is his ability to push limits. At the same time, his stories encourage more young people to follow up and put themselves into inheriting traditional bamboo weaving skills,” Yang says.
